Rival CZF625 2.5-Liter Cool Touch/Cool Zone Fryer, Black Review

We got this for frozen fries.Works great.The instructions on the fries want a higher temp than 375, the max of this and most fryers, but cooking at max 375 for 6 min works just fine.The only two problems I have with it are the smell and after a few times taking the lid off to clean it, the lid stopped snapping back into place. It goes back on, but steam comes out all sides and is loose when opening.One side snaps in so I haven't had it fall off, but the other side seems to just have worn out.

The smell there doesn't seem to be anything to do about.Even the expensive ones it seems from the reviews that the only way it wont smell up the house is cook outside or near a window and use a fan.

Due to lack of cleaning, the old one we have is fairly dirty and we decided to get a different deep fryer.After reading reviews on a bunch of them, I decided to just get the exact same one.They all seemed to have great and terrible reviews.We know the quirks of this one, and it really does work great on frozen fries.

If you own a deep fryer and do not know about these yet, chances are you really need these.Depending on how often you use your deep fryer, you could need replacements in less than a month.

Rival CF156 black 1.5L fixed bowl deep fryer Review

I bought this fryer last year for use at the lake during the summer.Though it promises a lot, I found out the hard way it doesn't exactly deliver all that it promises.

The biggest drawback to this fryer is that it is next to impossible to clean.The oil reservoir is non-removable, which means that you have to clean it one "wipe" at a time.I don't know who came up with this idea to anchor it into place, but its the worst thing in the world you could do with a deep fryer.You will spend hours trying to get it clean, only to give up and say "well, it's good enough".

The product also claims it has a "cool touch" exterior.Granted, it won't scald you but it isn't cool to the touch.Quite a bit of heat pours out of this unit and I'd recommend you keep your small children away from it.

Overall, while it does a great job frying SMALL quantities of food, the hassle of cleaning it far, far outweighs any positive marks for its cooking abilities.Do yourself a favor and get a fryer with a removable oil reservoir -- you'll thank me later!

I have owned several deep fryers in the $80 to $100 price range, but had gone without a deep fryer for several years. I purchased my WPF100B at Costco for $30. The Amazon Marketplace price today is $89.99. I probably would not have been disappointed even if I paid $89.99. The design is very intelligent. The breakaway cord is very short for safety and it is easy to attach to the fryer without looking. The heating element is attached to the front panel and drops inside the oil container, so you cannot use solid oil (solid at room temp) such as shortening or lard. I use oil anyway, so that is not a disadvantage for me, and this feature makes it so easy to clean. The element must be cleaned by hand but the oil container is steel and can be cleaned in the dishwasher - along with the fryer lid. The lid even has a small window so that you can see the food cooking. The cool touch feature is so cool that I was able to pick up the fryer and move it while it was cooking. It even has small finger recesses on the bottom to improve your grip when moving it. The fryer basket is small for the relatively large amount of oil required - about 3 quarts. If you have the extra space you may want to consider a larger Waring Pro model so that you can cook larger portions. The manual recommends to filter the oil and refrigerate it after each use - up to 10 uses. The manual also recommends that you discard the filtered/refrigerated oil after 6 months.

The good:first and foremost, it does a great job deep-frying food.A full (3-liter) reservoir of oil heats up in about 10-12 minutes.The 1700 Watt heating element is plenty for this fryer.Fries are crispy and hot, and onion rings are also excellent.The basket and reservoir are large enough to make about 2 super-size portions of fries at one time.*EASY TO CLEAN*.The reservoir detaches from the unit.The heating element is one piece with the electronic controls, all other components are detachable.Cool to the touch.

The bad:these are all minor items.#1Thermostat up to 375.I would like a thermostat that goes up to 400, but could find none - even among the $1000 professional models.#2 The timer is not accurate enough.I would like to see a real kitchen-style timer with 30-second intervals at the low end, increasing to minute and then 5-minute intervals.#3I had a problem with the filter cover popping off every time I used it for the first few weeks.This no longer happens.#4Oil leaks out (the top) during cooking.I wish the cover had a tighter seal so that all the steam and splatter would go through the filter.

If you can find a better deep-fryer than this for under $100, please let me know!

Update 1-12-07:It's been about 3 months since my purchase, and I use my deep-fryer about twice a week.I use light olive oil, which has a high smoke point and also is supposed to *lower* cholesterol (yes, it's true).Of course, you still have to consider the calories.Only use light or extra-light olive oil since these have a high smoke point.The fryer still operates as well as described above.When buying, you may want to consider ordering Rival RF22 replacement filters at the same time.The description of these falls short - I get 6 carbon filters and 3 grease filters from this package for this fryer.

My best french-fry recipe, found on the internet, modified only very slightly but expounded on significantly:
1)Slice potatoes (any type) into 1/4-inch slices.I use a V-Slicer to get uniform fries (it comes with a 1/4-inch cutter, despite contradictory descriptions).Very important - potato skins make *NO DIFFERENCE* in texture or taste, so leave them on.
2) Soak in water in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours. (Water may become discolored, depending on the type of potato.Don't let it worry you.)"Soaking" fries are still good after three days (they've never survived uneaten in my refrigerator for longer than that).
3) Drain fries and dry carefully (I dry one "load" at a time).Dry until the fries no longer look wet.
4) Coat lightly with corn starch (I just add fries and corn starch to a plastic container and shake).Coating should be barely visible on all fries.MUCH too much corn starch makes the fries taste mealy.Too little keeps them from being both crisp and juicy.
5) Wait for fryer to reach 375 degrees (highest temperature), and fry 10 minutes (until they *begin* to turn orange).Be careful not to over-fill the basket.All the fries should be covered with oil when the basket is lowered, or you will get under-done fries.
6) After cooking, lift the basket and allow it to drain for a few seconds, then unload the basket on a plate or server covered with a towel to soak up the excess oil.(I use small cotten kitchen/utility towels instead of mowing through paper towels.)
7) Eat!Some of the best fries I've ever had.Though they stick together when removed from the fryer, it's kind of fun to pull them apart.I top with malt vinegar and salt.

Presto Professional CoolDaddy Electric Deep Fryer Review

This is a great little fryer. It cooks enough for 2 servings at a time, do not overload. It has a nice list of features. The basket is very handy, the temperature guage and ready light work well and the lid with vents and a filter help reduce the grease smell in your house. Some foods with a lot of moisture will not fry well with the lid closed and even with the lid closed you will not eliminate the odor completely. I set this up on my stove when I use it so that I'm able to use the exhaust fan as well and then I am able to eliminate all of the smell. It cleans up nicely and I'm able to store the oil in it between uses for weeks.

The previous reviews clearly were not using as this is intended. I suspect they were overfilling with oil/food/both.
